Chapman also teaches private lessons in all mediums tailored to the student's abilities and goals out of his studio in Huntington Beach for $90 an hour.

Creativity 101 

Tuesdays 1:10 - 2:10 pm // Ages 6 & up

Unleash your creativity! Have fun exploring different mediums such as drawing, painting, and sculpture. Learn the step-by-step process of creating a beautiful piece of art. Throughout the year projects will vary from drawing still-lifes, painting animals, sculpting faces and more. This class is a great introduction to art for kids.

Oil Painting and Academic Drawing

Fridays 2:45 - 4:45pm // Ages 12 & up

Learn the step-by-step process of creating Oil Paintings and Drawings that masters have used for centuries. Students will first be taught the basic-fundamentals through advanced drawing techniques; learning about values, shading, and how to create the illusion of three-dimensional objects. They will begin with graphite pencil, advancing to charcoal, before diving into oil painting; learning the basics of color theory, perspective, composition, value, and the variety of brush strokes . Throughout the year, students will learn from Old Master art works, draw and paint from still lifes, draw from portrait models, study trees in nature, work on personal projects and more. This is a really informative and fun art class for beginners and advanced artists alike.

 

Note: Pencils, oil paints and brush cleaner will be provided in class. The rest of the art supplies needed will need to be purchased by the student. Materials list will be provided during the first class.

Human Anatomy with Sculpture and Drawing

Tuesdays 3:30 - 5:00pm // Ages 12 & up

In this fun and enlightening course students will discover the complexity and beauty of the human body as they learn to Sculpt and Draw the many bones and muscles.  Anatomy and proportion will be covered as your student gains confidence, using graphite and clay. Students will spend the first semester learning to build an armature (the metal structure which holds the clay sculpture) and will sculpt the entire human skeleton. During the second semester students will then sculpt all the muscles on top of the skeleton, learning the form and function of each muscle and its attachment-points to to the bones. Each week there will be drawing and reading homework on the bones or muscles that will be focused on the following week.

 

Note: This is a two-semester project; therefore it is a year commitment. Students are welcome to come check out the class, but within the first week, students must commit to the rest of the school year.

Reading curriculum: Figure Drawing - Design and Invention by Michael Hampton

Marine Science with Art

Tuesdays 2:20 - 3:20pm // Ages 7 & up

In this class students will learn about the Marine Environment while they learn to draw, paint and render the creatures and their habitats using different mediums such as watercolor, pencils, pastels, felt markers, collage and more. The first few classes focus on the geography of the ocean, ocean levels and waves; and then for the remaining of the year each lesson will focus on an animal of the Marine Environment. Each project coincides with the curriculum the students read for homework each week. As the semester progresses students will compile all of their artwork into a sketchbook, creating  a beautiful Marine Science with Art book.

Sculpture and Academic Drawing

Fridays 12:30 - 2:30pm // Ages 12 & up

Learn the Classical process of creating Sculptures and Drawings. Working from casts, still-lives, Old Master’s artworks and imagination, students will study the methods of rendering form in clay, graphite and charcoal. Students will be taught the basic-fundamentals through advanced drawing techniques; learning about values, shading, and how to create the illusion of three-dimensional objects. Students will also learn to build an armature (the metal structure which holds the clay sculpture), how to block in the basic shapes of a sculpture and render details in clay.
